Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Zhang Qingyang at the 8th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Proficiency Competition (Malawi)

2015-06-03

Hon. Emmanuel Fabiano, Minister of Education, Science and Technology

Hon. George Mkondiwa, Chief Secretary to the Government,

Mr. James Ali, Acting PS of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,

Distinguished Guests,

Dear Contestants,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon. Welcome to the 8th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for secondary school students in Malawi. The Chinese Bridge is a Chinese language proficiency competition initiated by the Chinese Hanban (Confucius Center), with the purpose of encouraging more youth around the world to learn and understand the Chinese language and culture. Since 2008, the competition has been successfully held for seven times. Around 1000 secondary school students from more than 50 countries attended the grand final in China. More than 20000 secondary school students attended the preliminary competition in their own countries.

The contestants from Malawi were proved fairly competitive in the previous competitions. During those times, they had to attend the competition in other countries. In order to simplify the access to the competition for the Malawian students, and at the same time encourage more Malawian students to learn the Chinese language and culture, we have organized the competition in Malawi this year. The winners will be able to compete in the grand final in China and be awarded an opportunity to study in China for at least half a year.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

With the rapid development of China, the Chinese language has been considered more and more important internationally, and its importance has been realized by most countries in the world. Learning Chinese has become a new trend and new fashion. Malawian people have also showed great interest in learning Chinese. In order to help the Malawian students master the language better, the Chinese Hanban has sent 7 Chinese teachers to Malawi, who are currently working in 4 different cities. With their hard work in teaching Chinese language and culture, they are greatly welcomed and acknowledged by the local people in their own cities. Today, they have brought their own students to attend the competition. At the moment, please allow me to extend my most sincere respect and gratitude to all of them for their devotion and dedication.

Last but not least, I hope the competition will serve as the bridge that connects the friendship and culture exchanges between China and Malawi, and make more people understand and like China. Wish all the contestants show the best of their performances in today’s competition.

Thank you.
