Spokesperson of Chinese Embassy in Malawi Strongly Condemns Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi's Visit to China's Taiwan Region

2022-08-03

On 2 August, in disregard of China’s strong opposition and serious representations, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited China’s Taiwan region. This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and sends a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for “Taiwan independence”. China firmly opposes and sternly condemns this.

There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. This has been clearly recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971, and has become the consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations.

In 1979, the U.S. made a clear commitment in the China-U.S. Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations that “the United States of America recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China” and “within this context, the people of the United States will maintain cultural, commercial and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan”. The U.S. Congress, as part of the U.S. Government, is obliged to strictly follow the one-China policy of the U.S. Government and not engage in any official interactions with China’s Taiwan region. Pelosi is the incumbent Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Her visit to Taiwan, in whatever form, under whatever pretext and at whatever time during her tenure, would be a serious violation of the one-China policy as committed by the U.S. Government and also the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, mark a major political provocation upgrading the official interactions and substantive relations between the U.S. and Taiwan. China absolutely does not accept this, and the Chinese people absolutely reject this.

Right now, the Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tension and serious challenges. The fundamental reason lies in the repeated efforts of the Taiwan authorities and the U.S. side to change the status quo. The U.S. side, in an effort to use Taiwan to contain China, has continued to distort, obscure and hollow out the one-China principle, thus emboldening “Taiwan independence” separatist activities. In the face of these moves, China will not sit idly by and will have to make legitimate and necessary responses.

To resolutely safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country represents the unbending will of the more than 1.4 billion Chinese people. To realize the complete reunification of the motherland is the common aspiration and sacred obligation of all Chinese sons and daughters. The U.S. side, should stop meddling in Taiwan affairs and China’s internal affairs, stop supporting or conniving at “Taiwan independence” separatist forces in any form, must honor the one-China principle and the provisions in the three China-U.S. joint communiqués with concrete actions and not go further down the wrong and dangerous path.

One-China principle is the political foundation of China-Malawi relations. It is believed that China's just act of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity will surely continue to gain the understanding and support of the Malawi government and people.
