2024-04-15

On 15 April 2024, an article titled “A Shared Future, A Better World” by H.E. Long Zhou, the Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, was published on The Nation and Daily Times, elaborating the important concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Full text of the article is as follows:

The world is becoming more turbulent, crises and conflicts keep flaring up, the humanity has once again reached a crossroads in history. Faced with changes unseen in a century, Chinese President Xi Jinping, from the perspective of history and times and focused on the common and fundamental interests of the Chinese people and people of the world, reflected deeply on the critical issue of what kind of a world we should build and how to build it, and in the year 2013 put forward the important concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind. It is not only the Chinese solution to the “questions of the times” facing the world today, but also a righteous way that brings benefits to the people of the world.

In building a community with a shared future for mankind, the goal is to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world of lasting peace, universal security and shared prosperity, the pathway is promoting global governance that features extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, the guiding principle is to apply peace, development, equity, justice, democracy and freedom, the common values of humanity, the basic underpinning lies in building a new type of international relations, the strategic guidance comes from the implementation of the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, and the platform for action is high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. On this basis, China seeks to bring countries together to meet challenges and achieve prosperity for all, and usher in a bright future of peace, security, prosperity and progress for our world.

Given the series of major issues and challenges the world facing today, China calls for an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization. An equal and orderly multipolar world is one in which all countries, big or small, are treated as equals. China always adheres to fairness and justice, advocates and practices true multilateralism, and advances democracy in international relations. China maintains that all countries should jointly safeguard the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, jointly defend the universally recognized basic norms of international relations, and jointly participate in the reform of the global governance system. China has proposed the “Three Global Initiatives” as well as Belt and Road initiative, and has engaged constructively in resolving hot spots international issues such as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Ukrainian crisis. These are Chinese solutions and Chinese wisdom to build an equal and orderly multipolar world.

A universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization categorically rejects all forms of unilateralism and protectionism, and any attempt to roll back globalization. Such globalization needs to continuously promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, focus on solving structural problems that hinder the sound development of the world economy, and help maintain stable and unfettered global production and supply chains. China champions an open, inclusive, balanced, and win-win economic globalization with Chinese modernization, continues to increase investment in global development cooperation, and helps developing countries improve their independent development capabilities through high-quality Belt and Road Cooperation. We developing countries work together to make the pie of the global economy bigger and share it in a fair way, so as to make development both adequate and balanced, and help people of all countries embark on the road of modernization.

China’s development cannot be achieved in isolation from the world and global prosperity cannot be realized without China. China, the world’s largest developing country, and Africa, the continent with the largest number of developing countries, have long formed a community with a shared future. In recent years, China and Malawi have witnessed deeper political mutual trust, closer people-to-people exchange, and more fruitful results in mutually beneficial cooperation. In August last year, President Xi Jinping met with President Chakwera in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the two leaders reached common understandings on promoting bilateral practical cooperation and advancing China-Malawi relations. As a good friend, partner and brother of Malawi, China is willing to carry out strategic alignment under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, and the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative with the Malawi Vision 2063 and continuously expand practical cooperation. Let us seek common development in the spirit of openness and win-win cooperation, deliver more benefits to our two peoples and make contribution to the community with a shared future for mankind!
